Spanish is the most-widely spoken Romance language and, with about 500 million speakers, the fourth most widely spoken language worldwide, according to some calculations. A-level Spanish helps students develop confident, effective communication skills in Spanish and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where Spanish is spoken. It develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context.

Through studying a GCSE in a modern language, students should develop their  ability and ambition to communicate with native speakers in speech and writing. The study of a modern language at GCSE should also broaden students' horizons and encourage them to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries and develop new ways of seeing the world.
